Štajerska Wine Region

Štajerska is located in the north-east of Slovenia and is the country’s largest wine-growing region. For centuries, this area has been regarded as truly distinguished—regardless of which state it belonged to throughout history. It is here that you can explore Slovenia’s most delicate, aromatic white wines, and the region is also renowned for exceptional late-harvest and botrytised dessert wines.

But no great wine region exists without winemakers who work together. In Styria, they have united in an autonomous, independent organisation—the Association Štajerska Wine Region—dedicated to elevating the region, nurturing its development and heritage, and presenting it to every visitor through the very best wine experiences.

The wine-growing region is divided into six subregions: Ljutomer–Ormož, Maribor, Radgona–Kapela, Haloze, the Central Slovenske Gorice, and Šmarje–Virštanj. Across all of them you will find celebrated vineyard sites whose combination of landscape, altitude, and favourable soils and climate enables outstanding wine production—placing these slopes among the world’s finest vineyard locations.

The climate in Slovenia’s Štajerska wine region is continental, with warm to hot summers and cold winters. It is strongly influenced by the Alps, the Pannonian Plain, and also the Adriatic Sea. Moving from west to east, the climate becomes progressively warmer.

Local soils also play a key role in shaping the wines’ character. Throughout Štajerska, vineyard soils are sufficiently deep, airy, and well-draining, providing excellent conditions for the vines—and, in turn, producing harmonious wines with refined floral notes. These nuances vary from one subregion to another, inviting you to discover them on urban-and-nature escapes and scenic wine adventures.
