Fala Castle

Fala Castle is first mentioned in 1245, when the Benedictine abbots of St. Paul transferred the seat of their Drava estates there from Lovrenc na Pohorju. The estate passed through various hands, but it became a truly important cultural centre in 1620, when the University of Vienna established philosophical, theological, and economic studies there. This is believed to have made Fala Castle the first institution of higher education in Slovenia.

After liberation, the manor came into public ownership, and during the post-war period much of its rich interior furnishings, along with many treasures, were either lost or destroyed by the residents who successively held the keys to its gates.
