Dominican Monastery Ptuj

Ptuj Municipality

Dominican Monastery

The Dominican Monastery on the western edge of the town was founded in 1230 by Matilda, the widow of Frederick III of Ptuj. The Dominicans carried out their mission in Ptuj until the dissolution of the monastery in 1785, when the buildings were converted into barracks. At the beginning of the 20th century, the finest halls were assigned to museum collections, and today this remarkable monument serves as a cultural venue. From April to October, it is also open to visitors for tours. The monastic complex reflects both Gothic and Baroque elements, while the adjoining park offers a wonderful view of the River Drava.
