Church of St. Urban

The Church of St. Urban, standing on a picturesque hill above Kamnica, was first mentioned in written sources as early as 1352. The small church is a branch of the Kamnica parish. In 1668 the church had three altars: the main altar dedicated to St. Urban, and two side altars – one dedicated to Mary, and the other to Saints Primus and Felician. By the 18th century, however, the church had fallen into such decay that in 1785 the parish priest of Kamnica received an order from the Maribor office instructing him to deconsecrate and close it.

The local inhabitants were not satisfied with the fate of their church and decided to rebuild the decaying structure at their own expense and to maintain it themselves. Between 1855 and 1860 they erected the present small church on the remains of the old one, giving it the characteristic appearance of a modest rural chapel. On July 8, 1860, it was consecrated by the first Bishop of Maribor, Anton Martin Slomšek.
